Jewelry steam cleaners are expensive. So, I’m wondering if I can use the steam from a steam iron to clean my jewelry in the same way. Has anyone tried this? I’m wondering if this would actually work…or if it is not recommended.

I know this may be a stupid question but isn’t the gold color on costume jewelry made of something else? Can you test it at home? There are no markings to indicate 14K, 10K or anything like that on the brooch or the necklace. Please don’t tell me to take it to a jeweler.
